NIO EVE

The Challenge

Developing the vision car for NIO - a Chinese EV start-up.

The Outcome

EVE, our vision for an autonomous car of the future. Your digital host powered by artificial intelligence. At the heart of EVE lies NOMI, a digital companion powered by artificial intelligence. NOMI constantly learns about its passenger’s interests and tailor’s information to meet their individual needs. Two physical embodiments of Nomi can be found at the front and rear of the vehicle.

Designing a living space that adapts to your needs and moods, the comfortable and spacious interior reflects more a living environment than a mode of transport.

The seating layout is designed to deliver flexibility and an enhanced feeling of spaciousness. It can accommodate six passengers in its five permanent positions and folding seat. Passengers are encouraged to disengage from the stresses of everyday and lose themselves in a moment of comfort, peace and reflection.

Lighting as a mood enabler

NIO developed a set of modes for different key moments during the journey. When in AD (Autonomous Driving) the cabin adapts to the mood of the user, allowing different activities to happen like to recharge, reconnect with friends or just to wonder. A big part of my role was to study colors and emotions and connect our designs to improve the perception of the space. We paid special attention to cinema, to understand how cinematographers use color lighting to create different atmospheres in the same scene. I worked closely with a technologist to identify and develop different technologies that will transform the cabin of the future.

Interact with the world around you. Active glass across the entire upper canopy becomes a canvas for NOMI to provide an augmented experience, delivering everything from personalized information to entertainment. We researched and start developing new glass technologies where we were able to test our concepts like shaders or identifying opportunities for branding.

Living spaceIn the primary seating area two facing seats surround a discrete fold-out table to provide a multifunctional space that can be used to entertain or be productive. Understanding the different activities and moods that could take place at the same time was crucial to allow different personal bubbles.

Shy tech

A non invasive technology that doesn’t compromise the presence of the user and enables smoother transitions. The vehicle of the future will have an elegant and well integrated interface with a touch of magic.
