Lightship Storage Solutions
The Challenge
The RV operates in two distinct modes - 'camp mode' and 'tow mode' - which require the canopy to lower for better aerodynamics. This presented a challenge: designing storage solutions that wouldn’t collide or be at risk of damage during transitions. As a result, most storage needed to be positioned below waist level, where clutter naturally accumulates. Through user research, we identified that packing and unpacking before and after trips required significant effort, highlighting the need for a more efficient storage system.
The Outcome
We developed a modular storage system inspired by airplane overhead compartments, allowing bags to be securely stowed yet easily accessible. The system includes a mix of hard and soft shell storage options, giving users flexibility in their selections. Additionally, we designed custom packing cubes that fit seamlessly into the console area, accommodating up to 13 carry-ons in total - 8 in the overhead compartments and 5 in the console. With these soft bags, users only need to pack once at home, eliminating the need to unpack at their destination. All storage components, including the overhead bags and console packing cubes, are custom-designed accessories tailored for maximum convenience and space optimization.
Overhead Bags on gear-rails
Once we defined the storage envelope, we began prototyping the volume in cardboard. Collaborating with a bag shop, we selected muted tones to complement the headliner textile, ensuring a seamless visual integration as the bags would sit adjacent to it. Since these bags were designed for both in-vehicle storage and independent use, we prioritized durability and flexibility - opting for a rugged tarpaulin bottom. The canvas-like grey fabric provided a soft, warm touch, while the sturdy handles ensured comfortable shoulder carrying. A wide, heavy-duty zipper allowed the entire bag to open fully for effortless access. A few subtle pops of chartreuse highlighted the handle areas, adding a refined touch of contrast. The logo was subtly placed - present yet discreet.
Perforated patterns for lightness
A modular storage system designed for adaptability, allowing users to configure it based on their needs. Soft, packable bags are prepared at home and seamlessly dock into dedicated shelves, eliminating the need to unpack. Technical perforated patterns enhance both visual and physical lightness. When the vehicle is in tow mode, the bags remain securely in place, avoiding collisions or obstructions. Every item has its designated space, ensuring a streamlined and efficient storage experience.
Technical look & feel
We developed two perforated patterns - one smaller and one larger - designed with ergonomics in mind. The sizing prevents small fingers from getting stuck while still allowing for interaction, such as attaching a hand towel or securing a bungee cord. These perforated grids are integrated across all storage elements in the cabin, including the console, overhead compartment, magazine rack, under-seat storage, bathroom vanity and shelves. This subtle yet consistent design language visually reinforces designated storage areas, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.
A system of soft and hard storage solutions
These packing cubes were purpose-built to optimize space within the console, ensuring maximum efficiency. Designed specifically for our application, they allow the console to accommodate the equivalent of six carry-on suitcases. Custom-shaped to fit seamlessly, the system provides a total capacity of 13 carry-ons - eight in the overhead compartments and five in the console - maximizing every available inch while maintaining an organized, intuitive storage experience.
